"Ah Ken, ask Wan Fen to shut up. She is so irritating!"

Bangkok Trip - Part 5

Last day: 01 April 2008

Well, we didn't really do much except to check out and hang out around our hotel. I managed to get a French manicure and pedicure at a nail salon nearby for a total of $15 SGD. Cheap cheap! But the quality/ service of it wasn't as professional as that of Singapore's nail salons of course. Other than that, we just spent time taking more photos around our lovely hotel, Le Fenix Sukhumvit. Check it out at http://www.lefenix-sukhumvit.com/. Highly recommended!

Overall, it was a wonderful trip with all the retail therapy and beautiful sightseeing. I also realise that Thai people are very hospitable. More than once, we've been approached by helpful Thais who offered us assistance when they saw us trying to figure out our directions with our map in hand. They even recommended us where to go and what to do. One of our cab drivers was also especially helpful in introducing more about Bangkok to us. Then again, there were also a few cab drivers who weren't very friendly and tried to cheat us.

Important tips:
  1. Always carry a map around in Thailand lest your cab driver takes you for a joy ride.
  2. Always be firm when bargaining!
  3. Be prepared to do lots of walking in the hot sun, so bring lots of water, sunscreen and shades!

Bangkok Trip Part 4

4th Day: 31 Mar 2008

First stop: Wat Pho/Grand Palace
Both are unmissable majestic sights. It's amazing how the ancient people could build such exquisite and extensive architecture with their limited technology. We almost couldn't make it to the Grand Palace as there was some ceremony going on which allowed only Thai people. The Wat Pho starrs the Reclining Buddha which is so huge that it takes about 2 minutes to walk from his head to his feet. The Grand Palace of course, is where the King had his coronation, but he doesn't live there though. Both places are sacred joints so all visitors are to be properly covered, i.e. no bare shoulders/legs/feet. Do be at the Grand Palace early though as the ticket office shuts at 12-1pm. PS: We bumped into Taiwanese artise Jiu Kong and his girlfriend at the Grand Palace! Catch him in the pics!

2nd stop: More shopping at Platinum Mall and Pratunam Centre

3rd stop: Coran Spa
Hubby and I had a hard time looking for a much-needed spa treatment (esp. after all the walking!) we wanted but we were lucky enough to find this one within walking distance from our hotel. The Coran Spa was celebrating its first anniversary and all packages were at half price! Impressed by the classy exterior decor and attractive prices, hubby and I decided to give it a shot and we were totally spoilt by their masseuses. It was a dark, tranquil haven for full body treatments, whereby Hubby and I took the "Deep Forest" treatment package which include a full body scrub and a 2-hour full body massage. The masseuses' powerful hand strokes applied pressure skillfully on our bodies for full relaxation, although there were times when the pressure was a little beyond our threshold. I was momentarily stunned when I saw the masseuse standing on Hubby's leg.

Last stop: Q Bar
The stylish joint is right opposite our hotel and we were pleasantly surprised that our hotel was having a joint promotion with them such that all its guests were entitled to free entry. Thus, Hubby and I changed up quickly after our spa to check it out. It was a Monday night so it was hardly surprising that there wasn't a bad crowd. Music was jazzy with a solo performance by a trumpeter. The decor was sleek and a little Victorian meets modernistic, making the ambience rather enjoyable. Despite the small crowd, I must say that their behaviour was rather open as many foreigners had their arms wrapped around their Thai partners, of which one pair included a lady boy.

Bangkok Trip Part 3

3rd Day: 30 Mar 2008

First stop: Siam Paragon
Things here are pretty expensive, as you could probably have guessed it from the name. So unless you're into designer stuff, I find it a location not really worth going to.

2nd stop: Siam Centre/Siam Square
They are oppositie each other and can be reached via the skytrain (i.e. our MRT). The really funky boutiques with young designers however, are opposite the 2 buildings at Rama 1 road. WIth cool labels like"God's Absent", "Perfect Combination", "POEM" , you'll be spoilt for choice. I stopped by Felice for some delicious Gelati on a comfy couch as well.

3rd stop: MBK
Real huge mall with great variety of clothes, shoes, accessories, mobile stuff. Price is higher than Platinum though. They have great tailors here at reasonable price which are worth the effort to make yourself a suit or two.

4th stop: Jim Thompson House
Jim Thompson is the one who made Thai silk world famous. Apparently, he went for a hike once to the Cameron Highlands and never returned. His house in Bangkok became a tourist attraction as it documented his journey to fuse Asia with his English background. His collection of antiques and interior design showed an interesting cultural mix of Thailand traditions with modern England. Do google about him and be intrigued by his biography! And oh yes, do take the guided tour if you do visit this place.

5th stop: Spring & Summer Restaurant with Winter Bar
Spring serves main courses. Summer serves pastries. Winter Bar's desserts are to-die-for!
What can I say? If there is only one place in Bangkok to go to, this is it!
Mod, airy, chic, clean-lined 70s house rolling a funky modern Thai resto and a saucy chocolate/coffee bar into one scrumptious whole. It gives alfresco dining a whole new meaning. When you can lie on leather cushions in a big lawn to enjoy your meal, watching the stars and nightsky whilst listening to great music and relaxing in the night breeze, you'll probably think you're in paradise.

Bangkok Trip Part 2

2nd Day: 29 Mar 2008

First stop: Chatuchak Weekend Market
This place is so huge that we needed a map for it. The entire Chatuchak is divided into several sections selling different categories of items. I must say they sell about everything under the sun, from food to clothes, accessories, shoes, bags, lights, clocks, gift items/boxes, magic cards and even pets! It's a definite must-go especially if you're into all those handicraft, folkart and novelty items. They do sell quite a lot of handmade goods there going for a good price, especially if you know how to bargain, a hidden talent of Hubby's which was uncovered during the trip. Do be armed with lots of water and tissue to "tahan" the swealtering heat if you're going in summer.

Second stop: Platinum Fashion Mall
Hubby and I shopped ourselves silly here where we had to practise the art of bargaining. Its another shopping paradise (thankfully with air-con!) where all things are going at wholesale prices when you buy more than 3 items from a single store. They're got really fashionable clothes, accessories and shoes for both genders and they've kindly divided all six storeys of it according to their respective categories of goods, i.e. shoes on 3rd & 4th storeys, leather goods and bags on 2nd storey etc. Its easy to get lost there as there are many small lanes. Just imagine a triple version of Far East/ Bugis Village.

Last stop: Mambo Cabaret
After dinner, we headed back to the hotel to unload our shopping goods before heading down to Mambo Cabaret. Its touted as the best transvesite show in the whole of Bangkok and boy, were we in for some eye candy. Some of the lady boys were so pretty that they made me ashamed! They dressed up in fanciful costumes, fit for a Brazilian carnival and put up a real show as they danced and lip sync to chinese songs from the early 90s, Japanese songs, Pussycat Dolls, Coco Lee and even Da Chang Jin! They even had a few musical skits with some crass humour, making us all laugh. The performers also came down to the audience area to "interact" with us, i.e. sitting on guys' laps, caressing them etc. Hubby got pulled up the stage to participate in a short dance as well! I'll try to upload a few videos of the performance soon. In the meantime, do enjoy the pictures!

Bangkok Trip -Part 1

I'm finally back from Bangkok and I must say it was a very enjoyable trip with all the fabulous sightseeing, great shopping, wonderful food, and of course lovely company.
I decided to blog this in English because I figured it would really take way too long to blog in Mandarin for the entire trip so please pardon me. I'll be blogging about the entire trip day-by day, so please give me some time as I get everything in order. Here's the first night for a start, do stay tuned for more about the rest of the trip!

1st night: 28 Mar 2008

Hubby and I reached Changi Airport at 6+ and had short meet up with my sisters who kindly came to see me off. After a brief meal at Ya Kun, we headed to board our flight SQ632 due to reach Bangkok at 11+ pm.
Bangkok is behind Singapore time by about an hour so it was actually 10+pm when we touched down at Bangkok airport.
It was interesting how the Bangkok airport arranged for foreigners to take cab back to our hotels. Unlike Singapore where we had to board cabs one by one in queues, the Bangkok taxi queue was processed in a much faster way as cabs were all parked in a diagonal manner in the "taxi carpark". In this way, many people could board their individual cabs at once without obstructing each others' way. We simply had to tell the Admin desk in front of the taxi queue our hotel and its address and they would assist us in getting a ready cab. Instead of waiting for the cab to come to us, we walked to the cab together with the airport staff where they told the cab driver our address and fixed a price for the ride. The ride to our hotel,
Le Fenix Sukhumvit(a great boutique hotel BTW), took about half an hour.

Upon checking into our hotel and brief unpacking, we explored the area around our hotel and realised that we were situated in a hip and happening area with the Qbar and the Bedsupper Club as our neighbours. We also realised that there were many hookers standing around waiting for customers. Clubs here close at 1am so right after that is when all the "CCA/action" starts. The hookers simply waited outside the streets and clubs and they would hit on Caucasians and soon, they would be walking hand in hand.

We bought some food from the nearby 7-11 and supermarket and retreated back for our much needed rest in our hotel room.
